Training and Education
Monica initially studied hotel, catering and institutional management at Brighton University before throwing caution to the wind and training as an actress and singer at The Academy of Live and Recorded Arts, London, studying acting under Sam Kogan, voice under Philippa Davies and Sean Cotter (RTE). She was a recipient of a school bursary. Monica later read Modern Foreign Languages at Sunderland University graduating with a First and qualified teacher status, following Sunderland University’s PGCE programme, (ranked as one of the top providers for secondary education by OFSTED, category A). Her studies at Sunderland enabled her, under the Erasmus scheme, to study simultaneous translation and interpreting at the Université de Toulouse, le Mirail, France. Whilst working as a teacher she studied for an MA in Modern German Studies at Sussex University (recipient of the Schild Scholarship) and is attempting to complete a DPhil in her free time... Monica has been widely published in theatre studies, linguistics, comparative education and exile studies; she is registered with the General Teaching Council for England and the Actors Union Equity.
Monica has worked as an actress/singer/presenter in cabaret, theatre, radio and voice -overs in England and abroad. She has worked as a freelance interpreter for the Royal Opera House London, as a radio journalist for local radio, as a teacher of English as a second language for Berlitz Paris and as a secondary school teacher. Qualified, highly experienced and an Edexcel GCE examiner, Monica holds upper threshold status and has taught up to GCE German, French, English and Theatre Studies in state and independent schools in inner London, fringe and the North East of England. Her DPhil work at Sussex University has enabled her to lecture and give talks at a number of establishments in England and Germany which have included Sussex University, Technische Universitaet Berlin, University of London, The Wiener Library (London), the Lessing Museum (Kamenz, Germany) and the House of Commons. Monica has chaired discussions and been a speaker at numerous academic conferences. Monica is delighted at the reception FocalVocal’s latest workshop ‘Shakespeare in Schools’ has to date received, an opportunity to blend her academic and training/teaching knowledge into a workshop that enables many to hopefully enjoy the bard in a fun and educative way.
