Signdance Collective (SDC) is an international dance music theatre company based at Buckinghamshire New University, lead by deaf and physically disabled dance theatre artists working alongside composers and musicians.
Founded in 2001 by David Bower and FocalVocaller Isolte Avila, Signdance Collective develops original performances at the heart of which is “signdance”, the unique visual language they created together more than 20 years ago. In consistently innovative ways, SDC introduces both deaf and hearing audiences to ground breaking new dance theatre performances, through a blend of signdance, film, live music interpretation and new music composition. Signdance Collective is committed to artistic collaboration, research and education with an inclusive collective of physically disabled, deaf, and non-disabled artists, all of whom are highly respected in their own fields. The Signdance Collective works collaboratively with composers and musicians as part of the company’s commitment to live and visible music for all audiences. From bases at Buckinghamshire New University in southeast England and the Netherlands, the Signdance Collective together with Frognal has worked extensively around the UK and internationally, including tours of Slovenia, Holland, Greece, USA, Austria, Slovakia, Turkey, Sardinia and recent shows in Bangalore. Recent performances have included But Beautiful and Dances For A Lost Traveller for which the company won the Ability Media International Award for Dance in 2009. “There’s no denying the company’s bravery and innovative spirit.” What’s On Stage in London - Giles Cole (July 2009) "Signs of brilliance” Time Out 2009 .
